MalaMala Diary Entry: 10 March, 1998

Giraffes, Giraffethe tallest living mammals, are often seen around Mala Mala, where there is an abundance of their favourite food - acacia and combretum trees. Male giraffes can grow to heights of 5,5 meters enabling them to eat leaves unavailable to most other herbivores except elephants. Baby giraffes are, however, not often seen since the mother tends to hide them in thick bush during their early years to avoid predators such as lion and hyaenas. Despite this, about 50 - 75% of young giraffe are killed by these carnivores. A mother can put up a spirited defence and one powerful kick could kill a lion.
